In most cases, a sword mainly symbolizes royalty. It reflects the kind of general power and authority that royals have, especially that of a king or any head monarch. This has often been the case in every kingdom and monarchial government, regardless of whether such a governing structure is in the Eastern or the Western World. Yet in some cases, there are designs without a crossguard. A good example of this is the backsword. This type of sword is one having a blade with only one edge. The techniques and styles may actually vary depending on the culture or the historical period with which the sword and the ideals of swordsmanship have been associated. There are differences in the style and structure of blades as well. The designs were also mainly different from one another as the historical periods passed one by one. The purpose of a sword varies according to the historical timeline that it falls too. It also reflects different values and principles. It symbolizes different social constructs and ideologies in each historical era. It has its own symbolism in each general aspect of the Arts. In the Ancient Times, for instance, it reflects valor and war. Both in literature and mythology, it signifies power and social prestige. Up to these days, there are many swords for sale. Regardless of the viewpoint or the ideology of the person buying it, the sword still serves its main purpose even in these modern times.
